(TIS)

Translation and Interpreter Services (TIS) Interpreting and Translation Services allow the transfer of communications from a person’s preferred spoken language into English. This may include:

Translation and Interpreting services to access events and occasions not covered by current mainstream services ensuring NDIS will fund translation and interpreting supports for a range of needs that have been assessed as meeting reasonable and necessary. This might include:

​

  • Medical or health professional appointments such as GP’s or Specialists

  • Private legal and financial appointments

  • Special occasions such as weddings or funerals

  • Volunteering opportunities (such as joining a committee or local sporting group)

  • Attending support or interest groups

  • Access to sporting opportunities

  • Courses provided by private education providers, who typically claim “undue financial hardship” and do not provide interpreters.

Interpreting Services

Interpreting Services allow the transfer of communications from a person’s preferred spoken language into English. An interpreter transfers a spoken or signed message from one language into a spoken or signed message in another language, for the purpose of communication between people who do not share the same language. Interpreting Services are delivered by TIS National, on behalf of the NDIS. TIS National contract more than 3,000 certified interpreters across Australia, in more than 160 different languages. AUSLAN

Australian sign language (AUSLAN) is a language developed by, and for, Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired. It’s a visual form of communication that uses hand, arm and body movements to convey meaning.

Live Capturing

Live Captioning provides an instant readable alternative to spoken English. Offsite captioners listen to what is being said, transcribe the words, and then send the text over the internet to your screen within five seconds of it being said.

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

Video Remote Interpreting is a service that uses videoconferencing technology to provide a professionally accredited Auslan-English Interpreter via the internet. VRI allows you to see and talk to an interpreter without being in the same room, or even in the same city. VRI is not widely available as a workplace adjustment, however we are working towards providing VRI as a workplace adjustment for employee who are Auslan users in the near future. 

National Accreditation Authority of Translators & Interpreters (NAATI)

NAATI is the national standards and certifying authority for translators and interpreters in Australia. It is the only organisation to issue certification to practitioners who wish to work in this profession in Australia. NAATI is a standards organisation responsible for setting, maintaining and promoting high professional standards for the Translating and Interpreting sector.

National Auslan Booking Service (NABS)

National Auslan Booking Services (NABS) provides interpreters for Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing people who use sign language and would like an interpreter for private health care appointments. NABS is free to people who are not eligible for NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). Services include Face to face interpreting (onsite) and Video Remote Interpreting (online)

National Relay Service

National Relay Service is a free-of-charge phone service to assist people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired to make and receive phone calls via a range of devices from computers, tablets, mobile phones, an ordinary phone or a TTY (a special phone with a small keyboard and screen).​ There are a number of relay call options (connections) that can be accessed by phone, web or teletypewriter (TTY). There may be more than one relay call option that suits you, depending on your needs and situation. 

The NRS uses specially trained contact centre staff called relay officers who act as the central link between people who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or have a speech impairment, and the person or organisation they are calling. A relay call allows you to communicate with another person while they use the phone, even if you can't hear or use your voice. Relay officers convert voice to text or text to voice. Sometimes they convert between Auslan and English.

Automated Telephone Interpreting Services (ATIS)

ATIS is an automated immediate interpreting service for agency clients who need to access a phone interpreter.

ATIS allows you to immediately communicate with your non-English speaking client with a phone interpreter, without having to call the TIS National Contact Centre for operator-assisted interpreter allocation. Previously available in 18 languages, ATIS is now available in over 50 languages. ATIS provides

  • Direct access to an immediate phone interpreter.

  • Save time by avoiding lengthy call wait times during peak times.

  • Available in over 50 languages.

  • Access ATIS through a single free call 1800 number.
