Modifications

Home modifications are changes to the structure, layout or fittings of a participants home including the design and construction, installation of equipment, changes to non-structural components of a building and the installation of fixtures or fittings. Home modifications must be assessed by qualified professionals (either and occupational therapist or building construction professional). The provision of home modifications may be provided to the:

  • Bathroom

  • Kitchen

  • Inside of the house or

  • Outside of the house.

 

Approval of funding for modifications requires an assessment and recommendation from suitably qualified professionals plus appropriate quotations for construction.

Standard Home Modifications are non-structural and are decided upon by reasonable & necessary criteria:

  • Non-Portable Ramps

  • Adaption of bathroom & kitchen fittings

  • Shower screen removal

  • Digets

  • Stair lifts

  • Reposition of switches & Power outlets

  • Replacement of taps & slip resistant coatings

  • Ambient assisted living appliances

Complex Home Modifications (CHMs) are modifications that require structural changes to buildings, require council/local authority permits and TAT advice. Complex home modification must be told about the NDIA expectation of occupational therapists that can undertake the assessment, and that a building construction professional will also need to be engaged in the assessment process to review and endorse the proposed home modification:

  • Waterproofing of bathrooms where fittings & fixtures have been moved

  • Widening of doorway

  • Moving or Adding outlet
